History of Shallowater TX

In 1909, J. C. (Jim) Bowles, who owned a ranch near the future site of Shallowater, convinced Bob Crump, a member of a ranching family, to help establish a townsite company and attract a railroad to the area.

The townsite was purchased on May 18, 1909, and a school was constructed. After a bonus was given to Santa Fe railroad officials by rancher George W. Littlefield, negotiations were finalized.

The Ripley Townsite Company, named after a Santa Fe railroad official, was formed by the originators of the plan and other interested individuals and was incorporated on May 22, 1909.

The decision was made to name the new town Shallowater to encourage settlement. A celebration was held on June 26, 1913, to mark the town’s founding and the completion of the railroad.

As the ranching industry declined, the area saw a rise in farming, particularly cotton production. Shallowater experienced rapid growth in the 1920s, with the establishment of various businesses, churches, schools, and community facilities.

The town was incorporated in 1955 and continued to develop, with a growing population and an expanding range of services and amenities.

By 2010, the population had reached 2,484, and Shallowater had become a significant farm marketing center with processing and storage facilities.
